Continue on towards Schliersee ) [map], a village oasis at the edge of the small lake of the same name and centred around the Parish Church of St Sixtus, whose frescoes and stucco are the early work of Johann Baptist Zimmermann (1680–1758).

Tegernsee

In the midst of a picture-postcard landscape of gently sloping meadows lies Tegernsee ! [map]. First to arrive at this lake were the monks; then came the Wittelsbachs, the Bavarian royal family, followed by a host of famous artists. After the war, Tegernsee became a haven for politicians and wealthy businessmen, who secured expensive plots of land by the lake shore.

In the picturesque town of Tegernsee, the Monastery Church of St Quirin has a Baroque doorway which opens on to a triple-naved basilica with a ceiling fresco by Johann Georg Asam. Those who enjoy more raucous entertainment should call in at the Herzogliche Bräustüberl to sample the beer. Examples of Upper Bavarian domestic architecture can be found in the Rosengasse.
